SHOP | PLAY | TUNE IN | SIP

From the minds that brought you The Beer Dabbler and Growler Magazine, Rummage is an experiential event crafted to cater to Minnesotans of all ages and interests. Coming into its second year held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds at the new West End Market, visitors will shop exclusive deals from local and nationally recognized retailers, participate in fun activities for all ages, listen to live music, and sip local beer and other crafty libations. For the Rummage team, it's this precise combination, a lively formula, that makes the event a prime source of entertainment.

We recently caught up with the locally-driven team behind Rummage to find out more about the innovative event. And since these are the same folk that have proven themselves year after year with The Beer Dabbler festivals and issue after issue with Growler Magazine, we wanted to begin with the why. For the team, it really started with The Growler. They believe that as the magazine has evolved with the craft lifestyle scene, it has become a resource for those interested in fresh perspectives from the world of craft food, drinks, arts, music and more. So, the team set out to create an event that encompasses all of these elements and serves as a place to showcase and celebrate all the amazing makers and designers in our community. From there, it was the success of The Beer Dabbler festivals that gave them a template on how to produce an event that not only gave participants a platform to showcase their work, but to also elevate the experience with great food and drinks, live music, and family activities. The team explains, “There are so many incredible people doing spectacular things in our very own backyard and we want to do our part in supporting the local scene and helping others discover their new favorites.”

Focusing in on the shopping aspect of Rummage, the participating artists and makers supply the creative fuel for the event, fostering a sense of local pride through their work. For the Rummage team, what makes the vendors stand apart is the focus on quality, utility and design. “Each of these vendors is doing something truly unique and it’s all done with such an attention to craft and detail. The process of choosing vendors stems from a place of respect and adoration,”says the team.

One of these vendors is Lauren VanScoy, the maker behind Essence One, a body care company that focuses on natural ingredients, ethical sourcing, and handcrafted quality in every product.

“This is my first time participating in Rummage and I am really excited!  I’ll be offering a wide selection of my line - natural deodorant, lip balm. beard oils, body oils, lotions, bar soap, “Minnesoapas", body and hand wash, household cleaner (that makes me love to clean!) and other amazing smelling products.  I look forward to meeting everyone!”-Lauren VanScoy

In the inaugural Rummage last year, the team came away valuable lessons and the sense that this event has potential to be something special. The team shares, “First year events can be extremely challenging because you’re working off an idea and building everything from scratch so it’s crucial to plan and execute every detail and put yourself in a position for success. With the inaugural year of Rummage we feel we did just that. We planted the seed for this concept and now work to nurture and grow the festival each year. It was absolutely incredible to see the all these pieces come together to celebrate all things local.”

Another local maker and first time vendor is Tim Shore, the maker behind Shore Boards. He is passionate about handcrafting hollow wood, artisan stand up paddle boards—and he does it beautifully.

“I saw Sanborn Canoe Company was in it last year, and they are one of the businesses we work closely with as they provide us with all our custom wood paddles. It looked like a great event last year, so we definitely wanted to be a part of it this year! We will be bringing a 1 or 2 Paddleboards, and some of our newly launched, handcrafted longboard/skateboards. Come check us out!!” -Tim Shore

It all comes back to the combination—shop, play, tune in, sip—a natural fit for showcasing local flavor in every sense of the phrase. A weekend pass is $8 in advance or $10 at the door and good for two days of pop-up shops with a music festival, food trucks, and more. “It’s everything that you want out of a great festival or just a great day in general - beautiful products, delicious food, refreshing drinks and awesome tunes,” the team shares. “With Rummage, it’s all together in one place and each attendee can experience it all at their own pace.”
